Heroes Martyrdom Day is observed on the day Rao Tula Ram passed away. Rao Tula Ram was a freedom fighter in 1857, where the country’s first war of independence took place. Rao Tula Ram passed away on 23 September 1863 due to an infection.
Rao is considered as a hero in the state as he is helped drive the British away from the south-west part of Haryana. He also assisted the rebel forces in Delhi.
On this day, Haryana pays homage to the soldiers and fighters who fought for India. A function is conducted at the war memorial in Gurgaon. As a sign of respect, a salute is given by police personnel during the function. Police personnel also put their arms upside down during the function.
