If there were no civil engineers, there would have been no historic wonders like Taj Mahal, great wall of china, Howrah Bridge etc. This engineering deals with planning, designing, constructing, maintaining and operating infrastructures. Here, at RPIIT we equip our students with in-depth knowledge of traditional, fundamental principles and new technologies in order to address the complex, interdisciplinary problems faced within society. The undergraduate program at R.P. Educational Trust gives the students the necessary background to success within this new context and to become the future leaders of the profession.We are a student-oriented and multi-faceted research Institute. MISSION OF THE CIVIL ENGINEERING PROGRAM

  • The mission of the Department of Civil Engineering is to provide a balanced education to students, strong in scientific, engineering, humanistic, and social bases, so that they may attain a leadership role in their profession and “use their knowledge and skill for the enhancement of human welfare and the environment”.

CONCRETE TESTING LABORATORY

The Concrete Testing Laboratory contains facilities for mixing, casting, curing, and testing concrete cylinders, beams, and reinforced concrete structural members.

ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY

The Environmental Laboratory is equipped with equipment and instrumentation needed for the basic chemical and biological characterization of water, wastewater, and air samples.  Several bench and pilot-scale treatment systems are also available for instructional and research purposes.  Undergraduate students use the laboratory as an integral part of their environmental engineering coursework and to examine the practicality of innovative treatment systems that may be components of their capstone design projects.  Student use of the lab is preceded by appropriate safety training and instruction on the use the requisite equipment and instrumentation.

SOIL MECHANICS LABORATORY

The Soil Mechanics Laboratory contains equipment for testing soils in shear, consolidation, and compaction and for other physical and chemical tests. Field testing and sampling equipment is also available. As well it contains complete cyclic triaxial testing system with computer control is used for both research and instructional purposes.

STRUCTURAL AND STRENGTH OF MATERIALS LABORATORY

The Structural and Strength of Materials Laboratory is equipped with three universal testing machines and a closed-loop MTS hydraulic system. These machines/systems are used for testing a variety of construction materials and assemblies under both pseudo-static and dynamic loading. Complementing these equipments is a series of digital and analog instruments, and high-speed data acquisition and control systems.

SURVEYING LABORATORY

The Surveying Laboratory has a wide variety of modern surveying equipment, such as GPS-based surveying equipment, total stations, theodolites, and automatic levels for basic instructional and research purposes. Undergraduate students use the laboratory as an integral part of their surveying coursework and obtain any topographic information that can help their capstone design projects, such as highway design and land development. Student use of the lab is preceded by appropriate safety training and instruction on the use and care for the equipment.

TRANSPORTATION LABORATORY

The Transportation Laboratory has electronic volume counters that are used in studies to classify vehicles and measure their speeds in user-specified ranges and periods of time. This equipment is used for instructional and research purposes. The lab also has computers equipped with large scale traffic simulation software and signal design software. Undergraduate and graduate students use the laboratory as an integral part of their transportation and traffic engineering coursework and examine different traffic management strategies for their capstone design projects.

HYDRAULICS LABORATORY

The hydraulics lab illustrates principles of flow and water system design. The lab consists of a tilting flume, pipe pressure drop experiment, flow stand, Hele-Shaw cell, and pump performance experiment. The tilting flume has an adjustable gate, roughness, and bumps. The pipe pressure drop experiment has a venutri meter and pressure taps to measure losses in a rough pipe. The flow stand is used for measurement of nozzle discharge coefficients. The Hele-Shaw cell is used to illustrate two-dimensional flow patterns around objects. And, the pump experiment measures performance and provides visualization for different impeller designs and varying flow rates and can demonstrate cavitation.
